Ingredients:

  • 1 cup red lentils (masoor dal)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece ginger, grated
  • 1 medium tomato, chopped
  • 1/2 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite brand)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the red lentils under cold water until the water runs clear. In a pot, combine lentils and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes, or until lentils are soft.
  2. In a separate pan, heat oil or ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and allow them to sizzle for a few seconds.
  3. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent. Then, add garlic and ginger, sautéing until fragrant.
  4. Stir in the chopped tomato and cook until softened. Add turmeric powder, garam masala, and salt, stirring well.
  5. Once the lentils are cooked, add them to the onion and tomato mixture. Stir in the BBQ sauce and mix well, allowing it to simmer for another 5-10 minutes to meld the flavors.
  6. Transfer the dal to a serving dish and sprinkle shredded cheese on top. You can place it under a broiler for a couple of minutes to melt the cheese if desired.
  7. Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
