Ingredients:

  • 2 cups strong flour
  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine strong flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. While the dough is rising, beat the cream cheese until smooth and set aside.
  5. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and flatten it slightly.
  7. Place a spoonful of the cream cheese mixture in the center of each rope, fold the dough over and pinch to seal.
  8. Shape each filled dough piece into a pretzel shape and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. In a small bowl, dissolve baking soda in 1 cup of hot water. Dip each pretzel in the baking soda solution for about 30 seconds, then place them back on the baking sheet.
  10. Brush the tops with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  11. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
