Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 1/4 cup ice water
  • 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (for sprinkling)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add the diced butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Stir in ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until the mixture comes together. Form into a disk, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  4. In another bowl, toss the sliced apples with cinnamon, brown sugar, and lemon juice until well coated.
  5. On a floured surface, roll out the pastry dough into a circle about 12 inches in diameter.
  6. Transfer the dough to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Place the apple mixture in the center, leaving a 2-inch border.
  7. Fold the edges of the dough over the apples, pleating as necessary to create a rustic look.
  8. Brush the crust with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  9. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.
  10. Let cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
