Ingredients:

  • 4 bratwurst sausages
  • 1 can or bottle of lager beer
  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 brat buns
  • Spicy mustard, for serving
  • Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften, about 5 minutes.
  2. Sprinkle brown sugar over the onions and continue to cook until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Stir in apple cider vinegar and season with salt, pepper, and smoked paprika. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. In a separate pot, place bratwurst sausages and pour the beer over them. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook for about 10-15 minutes until the sausages are cooked through.
  4. Remove sausages from the beer and grill or pan-sear them on medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side until they are nicely browned.
  5. To serve, place each bratwurst in a bun and top with caramelized onions and a generous dollop of spicy mustard. Garnish with chopped parsley.
