Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)
  • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons ice water
  • 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for topping)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Shape into a disk, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  3. In another bowl, toss the apple slices with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Set aside.
  4. Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a 12-inch circle. Transfer to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Arrange the apple mixture in the center of the dough, leaving a 2-inch border. Fold the edges of the dough over the apples, overlapping slightly.
  6. Brush the dough with the beaten egg and sprinkle with granulated sugar.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
