Classic American Cheeseburger with a Twist

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb 100% beef (ground)
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 4 regular burger buns
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Lettuce leaves (optional)
  • Tomato slices (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning. Set aside.
  2. While the onions are cooking, shape the ground beef into 4 equal patties. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  3. Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the beef patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness.
  4. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of American cheese on each patty and cover to melt.
  5. Toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster until golden brown.
  6. Assemble the burgers: Spread a tablespoon of mustard on the bottom bun, add a lettuce leaf and tomato slice if desired, then place the cheesy beef patty on top. Finish with a generous amount of caramelized onions and top with the other half of the bun.
  7. Serve immediately and enjoy!
