Ingredients:

  • 6 cups of peeled, cored, and sliced apples (such as Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon butter (optional, for richness)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt. Toss well to coat the apples evenly.
  2. Allow the mixture to sit for about 10-15 minutes to let the juices release.
  3. In a separate small bowl, mix the cornstarch with a few tablespoons of the apple mixture to create a slurry, then fold this back into the apple mixture.
  4. Transfer the apple filling to a saucepan over medium heat. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture begins to bubble and thicken.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the butter, if using, until melted and well combined.
  6. Let the filling cool before using it in your favorite pie crust or as a topping for desserts.
