Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and citrus zests.
  3. Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. After rising, punch down the dough and knead in the sliced almonds.
  6. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let it rise again for 30-45 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the top of the loaf with the egg wash.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool before dusting with powdered sugar.
