Ingredients:

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece ginger, grated
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or ghee
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes, then drain.
  2. In a large pan, heat the vegetable oil or ghee over medium heat. Add cumin and mustard seeds, cooking until they start to splutter.
  3. Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Add turmeric, garam masala, coriander powder, and salt to the pan, and stir well to combine.
  6. Add the soaked and drained rice to the pan, stirring gently to coat the rice with the spices.
  7. Pour in the water, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.
  8. Remove from heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
  9. Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
